The Great Ocean Road Coast Committee invites local communities to a coastal forum for an opportunity to hear how the challenges related to coastal adaptation and growth are being considered and addressed in Victoria.

Hear insights from experts on the challenges and responses to:

• the demands of increased visitation
• the impacts of climate change
• increased community expectations
• protecting and managing cultural heritage.

Hear from special guests Jason Mifsud, Dr Anthony Boxshall and Ali Wastie.

Jason Mifsud – Chair Eastern Maar

Jason Mifsud is a proud member of the Eastern Maar people of the Gunditjmara nation in south-west Victoria.

He has a long background in Aboriginal affairs and has been involved in delivering sustainable structural reform and change management through measurable outcomes over many years. Most recently he was the Executive Director for Aboriginal Victoria where he led on policy development as well as the roadmap to a Treaty agreement, an Australian first.

Prior to this and starting his own business, Mifsud Consulting & Advisory, Jason was an AFL player, coach and executive.

Dr Anthony Boxshall – Chair Victorian Marine and Coastal Council

Dr Anthony Boxshall is a marine ecologist by trade who has worked in Australia and the USA across Government, academia and private industry. He is the Founder and Principal of Science into Action Pty Ltd, a science impact company turning great science into greater actions. A former National President of the Australian Marine Sciences Association (AMSA – the largest learned society for professional marine scientists in Australia), he has worked at UC Santa Cruz USA, Deakin University, and has been on several innovation Boards. A Melbourne Enterprise Fellow in the School of Biosciences at the University of Melbourne, he was until late 2017 the Director, Applied Sciences at the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) in Victoria.

He is a problem solver and strategist. As a hobby, he has been communicating the wonders of the marine environment to a broad audience through the award-winning “Radio Marinara” on 3RRR-FM in Melbourne for over 20 years. He is a dad to 4 children who continually amaze, inspire, frustrate and leave him in awe of the potential of the future and hence more determined to leave a positive coastal and marine legacy.

Ali Wastie – CEO Bass Coast Shire

With degrees in Arts, Education and holding a Masters of Diplomacy and Trade, Ali has held executive positions within the Victorian Public Service and Local Government. She is also an accomplished Board Director across the not-for-for profit, community, tourism and health sectors. She is also an accredited executive coach, mediator and alumnus of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

An authentic leader and outstanding communicator, Ali has achieved great outcomes for the boards, communities and organisations she has served. Ali is passionate about developing high performing teams and creating a workplace culture that is innovative, empowered, strategic, trusting and fun.

Before joining Bass Coast Shire Council, Ali’s prior roles within the Local Government sector include Director City Communities at Melbourne City Council and Director of Social and Economic Development at Yarra Ranges Council.
