Protecting the environment

About this page

Our coast is a treasure trove of natural wonders. Much of our work has a strong environmental focus to ensure we keep it that way.

The need to care for our coast is at the core of everything we do - from cleaning beaches and looking after various coastal facilities to overseeing recreation and tourism activities, managing improvement opportunities, and educating and involving others in looking after the coast.

Our coastal management work is focused on caring for the coast to enhance beachgoers' enjoyment while safeguarding its natural, social, cultural and economic values.

Our current environmental programs and campaigns include:

Two critically important documents provide the foundation for our environmental protection efforts. They are:

Environment and land management plan
Our framework for managing and protecting the coast against current and future threats.

Native vegetation and weed action plan
Our five-year action plan is bad news for weeds along the Great Ocean Road coast.
