Split Point Precinct Masterplan
About this page
The Great Ocean Road Coast Committee and Surf Coast Shire Council have prepared a draft masterplan to improve public land in the Split Point Lighthouse Precinct in Airey’s Inlet.
The draft masterplan recognises the precinct's unique natural, unspoilt character and seeks to preserve this for the benefit of locals and visitors alike – not to mention the area's abundant native flora and fauna.
It provides an integrated approach to improving public land within the precinct by ensuring consistent strategies and standards apply across different land management boundaries. Proposals range from short-term actions – such as rationalising signs – to longer-term, major projects including:
· upgrading the Lighthouse Heritage Trail to make it the ‘backbone’ of the visitor experience and encourage people to explore the precinct by foot rather than car
· improving the car parking facilities at Step Beach and the Skatepark
· enhancing coastal lookouts and providing better interpretive signs overlooking the Eagle Rock Marine Sanctuary, and
· ongoing weed control and revegetation to conserve the precinct’s biodiversity.
These actions address a range of key issues – many of which have been discussed in previous plans and studies – including conservation of natural and cultural values, traffic and parking, pedestrian access, signs, and visitor information and facilities.
