Lorne Adventure Playground

About this page

A new adventure playground has opened in Lorne.

A parade of junior seafarers took over the new Lorne Foreshore Adventure Playground when it was officially opened on Wednesday 3 September 2008.

The Great Ocean Road Coast Committee (GORCC) Chairperson Peter Anderson officially opened the new playground by handing it over to local primary school students from Lorne P12 College.

The children cut the ribbon and swarmed onto the playground wearing their own maritime-themed paper headwear creations.

About 60 miniature sailors, pirates and other seafaring folk were among the first children to use the new playground now it’s finished and ready to be handed over to the Lorne community.

Surf Coast Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Dean Webster, also participated in the opening in recognition of the collaborative spirit that has underpinned the project throughout.

Many people played a role in the playground’s establishment.

The Lorne community contributed ideas about how it should look and provided local information from the past and present, all of which was incorporated into the final design prepared by Thompson Berrill Landscape Designers.

Phil Jessen was contracted to construct the playground while Shane Davies looked after the steelwork and local boat builder Adrian Elliott lovingly restored the eye-catching couta boat.

GORCC funded design and construction costs - to the tune of $200,000 - with Council providing $20,000 towards project costs. We also managed the project and oversaw construction, and will continue to manage the playground on a day-to-day basis.

The opening marks the culmination of the ideas, input, work and effort that many people have put into the playground’s establishment to ensure it provides children with a first class recreation facility and the community with a focal point for many years to come.
