Caravan Park Upgrade

About this page

The committee has outlined the next steps in the upgrades of the Torquay and Lorne Caravan Parks.

December 2008

The Great Ocean Road Coast Committee recently gave in-principle approval for major improvements to the Torquay and Lorne Foreshore Caravan Parks but also identified the need to undertake three critical steps before the project receives the green light. These are:

1. Ensuring the park upgrades meet new State Government policy pertaining to Crown land caravan parks, as articulated in the new Victorian Coastal Strategy (soon to be released).

2. Obtaining approval from the Department of Sustainability and Environment as required under the Coastal Management Act.

3. Obtaining State Government approval to borrow funds to implement the necessary infrastructure, amenity, on-site accommodation and other improvements across both parks.

This means having the necessary approvals and financing in place before details about the park upgrades can be finalised. GORCC had hoped to provide such information to campers and others in the community over this summer but unfortunately is not able to do so at this time.

The committee is now aiming to have the planning phase and all three steps completed by April 2009, at which time it should be in a better position to provide more information about the upgrade and implementation arrangements.

The upgrades aim to substantially improve the Torquay and Lorne foreshore caravan parks. A range of improvements is proposed that will enhance campers' future holliday experiences while protecting the sensitive coastal environment and continuing to provide a good revenue stream to fund GORCC's significant coastal management responsibilities between Torquay and Lorne.

More than $8 million in improvements has been identified for the two parks.
