Point Roadknight Car Park Improvements
About this page
Works have been undertaken to improve the Point Roadknight Car Park.
The Great Ocean Road Coast Committee has completed a series of works to improve the Point Roadknight car park.
Works have improved the layout and condition of the car park and will benefit visitors to the Point Roadknight beach, which is a popular recreation area.
The car park services large numbers of locals and visitors to the beautiful Point Roadknight beach.
In 2006, the Committee finalised a masterplan for the site following community and stakeholder input.
The masterplan outlined a program of works and other activities to enhance the car park and surrounding areas.
It is pleasing, some 18 months later, to have now completed works to improve the site.
The new car park layout will still meet average summer demand for parking but ensures the sensitive coastal environment is better protected.
The works balance the popular recreation values of Point Roadknight with improved coastal and environmental management.
Landscaping works have protected important Moonah Woodland in and around the car park and improved the amenity of the site.
Further works will be implemented in 2008, including improved pedestrian access and a new picnic area overlooking the beach. Plantings with indigenous vegetation will also be undertaken.
The Committee has also recently received an Envirofund grant from the Federal Government to incorporate a natural stormwater treatment system.
The stormwater system involves a series of vegetated swales running alongside the car park to reduce the quantity, and improve the quality, of stormwater discharging into Bass Strait.
An interpretation shelter will increase community appreciation of the natural and cultural values of the site. Point Roadknight is rich in Aboriginal sites, contains significant native vegetation and is a nesting area for the rare hooded plover.
