Marine Safety Victoria will provide $749,000 towards a new and improved Torquay Boat Ramp.
Marine Safety Victoria will provide $749,000 towards a new and improved Torquay Boat Ramp. Funds will come from the Brumby Government's Boating Safety and Facility Program.
Through its Boating Safety and Facilities Program, Marine Safety Victoria provides funding for projects that improve boating safety and facilities. The Boating Safety and Facilities Program is funded by re-investing recreational boat operator licensing and vessel registration fees into projects that make boating safer and more accessible to more Victorians.
GORCC and Torquay Angling Club will also contribute funds to the project.
The new boat ramp will replace the existing ramp which, whilst still functional, is nearing the end of its useful life. The new ramp, which would be built on concrete piles similar to the existing structure, will continue to primarily function as a beach access ramp, with most launches occurring off hard sand. Two small side ramps are proposed to allow users to access hard sand for launching and retrieval in a range of tidal conditions.

Detailed designs for the new ramp are currently being finalised.
Background
A feasibility study was completed in 2007 and recommended a new boat ramp be constructed at Fishermans Beach in Torquay. The new boat ramp would replace the existing boat ramp at Fishermans Beach which is in poor condition.
Fishermans Beach is an important boating and recreational fishing site, with more than 5000 boat launches occurring each year. The beach is also highly valued by other users for swimming and recreation and is a sensitive coastal location.
The Feasibility Study was conducted over a 12 month period by consultants Connell Wagner, with the input of user groups and other stakeholders.
GORCC would like to thank all those who provided input to the Feasibility Study, particularly Torquay Angling Club and Torquay Marine Rescue Service who provided valuable assistance and advice.
The Feasibility was funded by Marine Safety Victoria’s Boating Safety and Facilities Program in conjunction with Torquay Angling Club and the Great Ocean Road Coast Committee. The Boating Safety and Facilities Program re-invests funds from recreational boat operator licensing fees and vessel registration revenue to support projects that improve boating safety on Victoria's waterways.
The Feasibility Study identified a replacement ramp as the most feasible option for Fishermans Beach. The new ramp will be similar in size and location to the existing ramp but will significantly improve beach access.
